Smiling While Stressed

Smiling, even when you don’t feel like it, is a simple way to trick your brain into reducing stress. This physical action has profound effects on your mental state.

How does it work?

Smiling triggers the release of mood-enhancing chemicals in the brain, like dopamine and serotonin. This reduces stress levels and can help you maintain composure in difficult moments.

How did it help me?

During my first hectic Milan Fashion Week, I forced a smile even when overwhelmed. To my surprise, it worked—my heart rate slowed, and I felt lighter. Now, whether handling runway nerves or stressful medical research deadlines, I consciously smile. It’s a small act, but it shifts my perspective and reduces stress instantly.

How can it help you?

When faced with a stressful situation, consciously smile for a few seconds. This might feel unnatural at first, but the act itself can relax your body and mind. Over time, it becomes an effective tool for managing stress and staying positive under pressure.
